Vegetable Ivory Button Jewelry

Vegetable Ivory ButtonsVegetable ivory is another name for the tagua nut, which comes from a tree in South America.

It was first used as ballast for ships traveling to Europe, but later as a button material because it could be dyed and carved to produce interesting designs.

A special note to Vermonters: there used to be a vegetable ivory button factory in Gaysville, Vt. back in the late 1800’s.
